[P]olice were called at around 4.20am this morning (September 3rd) to reports of a car being vandalised and set on fire on Station Road, Wigton.

Officers attended and found a Vauxhall Astra and a van on fire.

Properties on Station Road were evacuated as a precaution, and the road, from the junction with King Street, was closed.

This has since been re-opened and people have returned to their homes.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 4:23am four fire engines from Wigton, Aspatria, Carlisle East and Carlisle West attended a fire involving two vehicles, one of which contained a number of vehicle tyres, on Station Road in Wigton.

“Firefighters used six breathing apparatus, four hose reels, breaking in equipment, environmental equipment and one thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.

“Crews were in attendance for approximately three hours.

“A fire investigation is in progress in conjunction with Cumbria Police.”

Police are treating the incident as an offence of arson and are asking anyone with information to contact Workington CID on 101.
