[S]unday sees the twentieth Christmas Cracker Run organised by MG Cumbria. The event takes place every year on the first Sunday of December and is one of the few classic car events taking place during the winter. It attracts enthusiasts from all over the UK.
The cars set off from Rheged at 10.00 and take a 70 mile route through the north Lakes stopping at Caldbeck and Bassenthwaite en route. Crews are encouraged to dress up, decorate their cars and answer quiz questions at the control points.
Thee vent is entirely non competitive but the weather often provides challenging conditions. The event finishes with lunch at the Braithwaite Institute and the cars often head into Keswick for the traditional Christmas Fayre afterwards.
This year the organisers have had big problems with the many road closures that appear without warning. Routes are usually planned months ahead so that road books can be printed but the appealing number of ad hoc closures has mean the route has ad to be changes four times at the last minute.
