[F]ollowing a report of a verbal altercation in Workington this morning, and the subsequent report of a trespasser at St. Michael’s Nursery & Infant School, a man has been arrested.

Police were called at 8.09am today (25th May) with a report of a verbal altercation between two men on Milburn Street. One of the males then attempted to walk through the grounds of nearby St. Michael’s Nursery & Infant School.

Officers attended the scene to ensure the safety of staff and children. The school was secured as a precaution. The male made off in an unknown direction away from the school.

Temporary Chief Inspector Jon Sherlock said: “This morning police have taken precautionary action to secure a school following a report of a trespasser at St. Michael’s Nursery & Infant School.

“Officers were quickly at the school to secure the area.”

A Cumbria Police spokesman added: “A local man remains in police custody whilst enquiries continue.

“Police would like to reassure the Workington community that they are not looking for anyone else in connection to this incident.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log number 46 of the 25th May.
