Police have confirmed two arrests have been made following a large fire at a farm building at a lane off Chapel Lane, Distington.

A 43-year-old man and a 17-year-old male were arrested on suspicion of arson. They have been released under investigation while inquiries continue.

Officers have been working with Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service to establish the circumstances of the fire.

Police received a report of a fire at a farm building at 10.35pm on Saturday (September 8), in which there were five horses and a dog. All the animals died in the fire.

Detective Constable Tim Carr said: “We are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident.

“We would urge anyone with any information relating to this matter to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call officers on our non-emergency number 101 quoting incident number 268 of September 8.

Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
