New course to be offered at Lake District-based National School of Forestry

The University of Cumbria is planning to launch an innovative part-time qualification after renewed interest from within the forestry industry.

Last years’ Forestry Skills Study published by the government called for more skilled staff to be employed in the UK’s woodland management industry. One area highlighted by the report (section 5.5) suggested part time and distance learning would encourage more staff to take up study whilst still gaining practical experience.

Now the National School of Forestry, based at the Ambleside campus of the University of Cumbria, are proposing to launch a foundation degree on a part time basis to be delivered over a three year period.

“After the hiatus of the last few years there is now an appetite for a part time course allowing employers to release staff on block release and we’re delighted to have been approached by a number of organisations to design an appropriate course,” Mark Tomlinson, senior lecturer at the National School of Forestry, said. “We’ve listened to the industry and aim to offer the kind of course that will allow students to experience a wide range of vital skills and knowledge needed in today’s forestry industry. We’re aiming to run four modules a year which will offer the same benefits as a full time course.”

With existing close ties to the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) the new programme is also validated by the ICF. The university hopes to launch the course early in the new year.
