South Lakes MP Tim Farron and Lib Dem Education Spokesperson Layla Moran MP visited Sandgate School in Kendal on Friday.

Tim and Layla visited Sandgate, which is a school for children with special needs, at their site at Sandylands to learn about the funding challenges they face.

The school also has an integrated site at Queen Katherine School for children at Key Stage 4 allowing them to learn alongside other children of their own age.

During the visit Tim and Layla joined children for their end of week assembly and spoke to the school’s head teacher Dan Hinton about funding for special needs schools.

Tim said: “We loved joining Sandgate school for their assembly and to celebrate the great work that the children have done.

“As Lib Dems we’ve been campaigning for better funding for children with special educational needs, so it was really helpful to speak to Dan to learn about the challenges the school faces.

“But despite these challenges, it was so good to see the incredibly positive work they do.”

Layla said: “It was great to visit Sandgate school.

“This is a pioneering school at a national level, and the local community are lucky to have such great innovation on their doorstep.

“The success of the school is testament to the brilliant work of both teachers and the children.”
