Police have named a 13-year-old girl, who died following a road traffic collision at Broadfield.
At approximately 2:30pm yesterday ( Monday 18th February 2019), Cumbria Police attended the scene of a road traffic collision on the C3010 outside The Crown Inn, Broadfield, Southwaite, involving three vehicles.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “Police can confirm that the teenager who died following the collision has been formally identified as Ingrid Messenger, age 13, from the local area. Ingrid was travelling with her mother and sister in a Citroen at the time of the collision.
“At this time, the girls’ mother is in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, in a condition described as stable and her sister is at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, with injuries described as minor.”
Paying tribute, Caldew School Head Teacher Ms Vicki Jackson said: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of one of our students. Ingrid was exceptional in many ways and contributed fully to all aspects of life at Caldew School.
“She was a highly conscientious student who always gave her best and was a delight to have as a member of our close school community. She actively took part in many school events including the school choir, performing arts productions and was a pupil librarian.
“Ingrid was always kind and supportive of others and we will miss her greatly. We send our sincere condolences to her family, our thoughts go out to her sister who is also a member of our school and we will do all we can to support her.
“Support will be available in school for students and staff from Monday.”
A black Landrover Defender, driven by a 45-year-old male from West Cumbria and a Red Mercedes Sprinter van, driven by a 60-year-old male from Lancashire area were also involved in the collision. Both drivers were treated at the scene in respect of shock and minor injuries.
A 45-year-old man from West Cumbria has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences and on suspicion of perverting the course of justice. He has since been released under investigation.
Two crews from Cumbria Fire Service, Carlisle East and West attended the scene, along with two NW Ambulance vehicles and the Great North Air Ambulance.
Specialist police officers are supporting the family, and the school has been made aware to allow support to be put in place.
A police spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the family and those involved at this time”.
