Workington Leisure Centre

Better’s Workington Leisure Centre in partnership with Allerdale Borough Council has announced that the centre has achieved an ‘Excellent’ rating from leisure industry quality benchmarking organisation Quest.

The leisure centre, operated by Better – the customer-facing brand of GLL, the UK’s leading leisure charitable social enterprise – achieved the maximum possible rating of ‘Excellent’ in December’s Directional Review assessment from Quest, having achieved a ‘Very Good’ rating from the same organisation just 12 months after opening in 2016.

In order to attain this, the centre and its team is required to demonstrate proof of high quality and continuous improvement across a broad range of leisure operations and measurement criteria. These include:

  • Cleaning and Housekeeping
  • Maintenance and Equipment
  • Environment
  • Compliance Declaration
  • Customer Experience
  • Team & Skills Development
  • Planning to Improve
  • Community Outcomes

The feedback received from the assessor was very positive across a range of issues and particular praise was given to the centre’s atmosphere, informative website and social media accounts and the Workington team showing considerable ongoing commitment to delivering an excellent quality of service.

Workington Leisure Centre’s General Manager, Garry Schubert, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this award. At Better, our priorities are to provide first class leisure facilities for the communities in which we operate and to improve the health and wellbeing of all local residents. Achieving this award is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the whole Workington team in progressing these agendas across Workington and Allerdale. I want to thank all of our customers for their continued support”.

Michael Heaslip, Executive member with responsibility for leisure centres, said: “It’s great to see the new leisure centre in Workington continue to go from strength to strength – so much so we’ll soon need to get a new trophy cabinet! I’d like to thank everyone who’s worked so hard to achieve this award. It is richly deserved and is further endorsement of what is a fantastic sports facility this is”.
