The Barrow Super Soapbox Challenge is sure to be a fun affair

The Barrow Super Soapbox Challenge event sponsored by BAE Systems is set to be lots of fun in Barrow town centre on Saturday 29th June.

The event will see over 20 soapbox teams take on the town centre course in a diverse range of hand-built soapbox carts, which will use gravity to record the fastest time of the day. Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, ex-Olympic Ski-Jumper, will set the first time of the day as he hurtles down the two-storey start ramp on Dalton Rd and pilots the Barrow BID / Furness College soapbox racer down the 350m course. The racing starts at 10am on Saturday 29th June and entry to this fantastic, family-friendly event is absolutely FREE.

As well as watching the brave, (insane), soapbox drivers taking on the town centre course, Barrow’s town centre will also host Taylor’s Funfair, who will be located in Scott Street with family rides and Fell Street car park with larger, faster rides for thrill seekers. The Funfair will be open from 5pm till 9pm on Friday 28th June and 10am till 9pm on Saturday 29th June, so you can have a weekend of fun in Barrow town centre at the Super Soapbox Challenge.

Barrow BID has worked with partners to allow alcohol consumption in the streets during the event, however, alcohol will not be allowed in the Funfair areas of Scott Street and Fell Street car park and glasses and glass bottles are prohibited. Colin Garnett, Barrow BID Manager, said, “We want the weekend to be a fun-packed, family-friendly event.

“We understand that people want to enjoy food and drink during these types of events and it is a great opportunity for town centre businesses to boost their income. We would ask that all town centre pubs and bars serve alcohol in plastic glasses and that visitors to the town drink responsibly to ensure that future events are not put in jeopardy. If any businesses or members of the public have any questions or concerns I am happy to be contacted by email at: manager@barrowbid.co.uk.”

As well as the Funfair on Friday 28th June, The Forum Theatre will also be hosting two Soapbox launch events, sponsored by Orsted and featuring Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards. The first family-friendly event starts at 5pm and will see Eddie introduce the film of his name starring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, before talking to the audience about his life as an Olympic Ski-Jumper and British icon.

The second event is a sportsman’s dinner with Eddie teaming up with North West comedian Big Lou to entertain the crowds with fun and laughter aplenty. The launch events will also provide people with the opportunity to see four of the soapbox carts competing the next day and children will get the opportunity to sit in the carts for photographs.
