Guy Pocock presents Chris Wolf with his cycling certificate

A cycling initiative that encourages riders with additional needs to get on their bikes and enjoy the benefits of cycling has celebrated a successful first year.

The Kendal based group, Wheels for All, celebrated with a special birthday lunch at Kendal Leisure Centre. More than 60 riders have improved their riding skills since the project was established and 20 of these were present at the birthday celebrations to receive a special cycling certificate.

Local cyclist Kath Finn coordinates the group with the help of volunteers from Kendal Cycling Club. The Cycling Project initiative is also supported by Kendal Leisure Centre, Bendrigg Lodge, Lane Quest and local bike shops Giant and Wheelbase.

Kath said, “It’s been quite a year as project coordinator for Wheels for All. As well as our regular twice monthly sessions we have taken part in three sportive, two bike orienteering sessions, ‘Ride the Lights’ at Blackpool and the Kendal Torchlight procession

“People have gone from riding around the car park to riding 10 miles on public roads, from riding trikes to riding two wheelers, from not riding at all to riding with their partners.”

Guy Pocock who presented the certificates on behalf of Kendal Cycling Club added, “Wheels for All has been an amazing success. We now have a group of local people with additional needs who rarely or never accessed cycling, attending sessions every time. They are getting fitter and they are happy. They have also experienced a sense of achievement and enjoyed belonging to a community of like-minded friends.”

Wheels for All sessions take place every 2nd and 4th Saturday morning from 9.30am until 11.30am at Kendal Leisure Centre. Bikes adapted for all abilities are available along with helmets. Individuals and groups are welcome to attend, no booking necessary, £3 per session.
