Same Same…But Different

Kirkby Stephen Community Arts invites its younger audiences to a family show that mixes Kathak, contemporary and Hip Hop dance, with hints of live music and physical storytelling, to create a playful and colourful world that explores our curiosities and fears, the times we feel different and when we belong.

Inspired by the well-known Anglo-Asian phrase ‘same, same…but different’, meaning “Yes, something kind of similar, but not the exact same thing”, three dancer-musicians conjure a magical atmosphere that celebrates our individuality, diversity and the bonds which connect us all.

‘Same Same…But Different’ has been made in collaboration with a number of primary schools in Birmingham and London and the children’s creative ideas and experiences of being different and belonging, have been brought into the show.

Birmingham based, award-winning Sonia Sabri Company is one of the UK’s leading dance and music companies renowned for dazzling, lively performances created by Directors Sonia and Sarvar Sabri. Their work is inspired by Indian and British culture and they have an international reputation for presenting Kathak in a contemporary context.

For their first full length dance theatre show for young children, the company has worked with dancers Laura Vanhulle, Marso Riviere and Askansksha Rawat, and invited dramaturg Sue Buckmaster, artistic director of acclaimed Theatre Rites, in the initial development stage. Together they have created a feel-good celebratory dance theatre show for everyone to enjoy.

By working with Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, and its network of village halls, Sonia Sabri Company are able to reach new audiences for their work.

Kate Lynch, Chair of Kirkby Stephen Community Arts said: “We are so looking forward to bringing the amazing Sonia Sabri Company to Kirkby Stephen with Same, Same… But Different. What a fantastic opportunity for young people in Cumbria to see award-winning professional dance on their doorstep.”
