Penrith Schools Carol Concert celebrates 35 years

The remarkable Penrith Schools Carol Concert returns for a 35th year to St Andrew’s Church, Penrith on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 December at 7pm.

This year 14 schools ranging from village primary schools through to Ulllswater Community College and Queen Elizabeth Grammar school will once again come together under the guidance and baton of the Penrith Schools Music Association lead teachers Martyn Soulsby (Head of Music, North Lakes School) and Lynsey Wrightson (Head of Music, Hunter Hall School).

Over two nights, the choirs and congregations will collectively celebrate the coming of Christmas with 32 hymns and carols – from rousing crowd-pleasers like ‘Hark the Herald’ and ‘O little town of Bethlehem’ to a newer piece composed by highly-respected local musician, Jilly Jarman, these concerts are a wonderful way to usher in the Christmas spirit and support local schools.

All the proceeds from ticket sales go back into the participating schools, allowing them to help fund music in schools and inspire the next generation of budding musicians.

Lynsey Wrightson commented: “This is now the second generation of local children who are taking part in these school’s concerts. It’s a real privilege to work with them and witness just what wonderful performances they put on. It’s such a busy time of year and for so many schools to make this extra-curricular effort every year demonstrates just how much enjoyment the students get out of the concerts.”

Tickets are available from participating school offices and Lakeland Music, Penrith at a cost of £6 for adults and £3 for children. There will also be a collection at the end of each concert for JIGSAW and CFM’s Cash for Kids appeal.

The full list of participating schools is as follows:
