Senior managers at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are going ‘back to the pumps’ this week as part of their support for On-Call Firefighter Awareness Week.

They are providing round-the-clock on-call crew cover at their local fire stations in addition to their ‘day job’ roles, in the same way as Cumbria’s 383 on-call firefighters countywide do throughout the year.

Cumbria County Council’s Chief Fire Officer Steve Healey said: “Our on-call firefighters are a vital part of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, they dedicate so much of their lives to serving their local community. As senior managers, we wanted to show how much we appreciate all their efforts and commitment during On-Call Awareness Week. Some of our senior managers started out as on-call firefighters, it’s a fantastic job with great opportunities to progress. We’re currently looking for more on-call firefighters and I would encourage anyone interested in joining to get in touch.”

During his time on call, Mr Healey was part of a crew from Kendal fire station called out to extinguish a fire on a boat on Windermere on Monday. Deputy Chief Fire Officer John Beard, along with Area Managers Brian Steadman, John Walkden and Craig Drinkald, are also working on call with their local fire stations this week.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service this week launched a recruitment drive for additional on-call firefighters to serve their communities, to coincide with national On call Awareness Week. Cumbria is looking to recruit on-call firefighters at 27 fire stations countywide, from Maryport to Milnthorpe, and from Brampton to Broughton (see full list below).
