Newlands Care Centre in Workington celebrated VE Day, with a party to commemorate 75 years since the end of the Second World War.

Staff and residents at Newlands Care Centre along with people all over the UK, joined together for the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’. In light of the current situation, rather than celebrating with street parties, at 3pm on May 8th, the country was encouraged to mark the day with a nationwide toast – “To those who gave so much, we thank you”. Paying tribute to the many millions at home and abroad, that sacrificed so much to ensure we all enjoy and share the freedom we have today.

Residents also celebrated the occasion by making bunting, socially distanced activities and reminiscence, and tucked into a delicious VE Day buffet complete with a red, white and blue Victoria Sponge Cake and Lord Woolton Pie.

Kim Whelan, General Manager at Newlands Care Centre, said: “Many of our residents have very clear memories of the Second World War, and reminisced about their experiences, so it’s a privilege to remember and celebrate with them. We had a lovely day, and we are making sure extra effort is focused on creating an enjoyable environment for all of our residents, whilst ensuring that the group activities are smaller, adhering to social distancing advice.”

Terri, a resident at Newlands Care Centre, said: “It is very important that we keep the memories alive of those who fought, and the staff have gone above and beyond to create a special celebration today for all of us to enjoy.

“Residents spent the afternoon listening to stories and experiences of others during and after the war. Staff have laughed, cried and celebrated with the residents while reminiscing times long ago.

We are playing our part in the wider care sector and supporting the NHS where possible. We are currently still taking admissions into our care home for those that need care in the next 4 weeks, so please do give us a call on 01900 872257 if you are looking for care or need any further help.”

Newlands Care Centre is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers, which is committed to delivering personalised care across its care homes and hospitals. Newlands Care Centre provides residential care, nursing care and dementia care.
