Cumbrian businesses are being encouraged to apply for next year’s instalment of the Queen’s Award after the success of a firm in the county this time around.

Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership is encouraging local firms to apply for the 2022 Queen’s Award for Enterprise after it was announced last week that Appleby-based Barrnon had been successful in the Innovation section of this year’s awards.

Established in 2007, Barrnon, owners of Cumbria Crack, the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald and The Keswick Reminder, is an engineering services provider.

The company identified an opportunity to develop specialist equipment for the decommissioning of nuclear sites, with the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise recognising their success.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the UK’s most prestigious business awards, offering recipients global recognition that their company is outstanding in its field.

They recognise and encourage the outstanding achievements of UK businesses in the fields of:

  • Innovation
  • International Trade
  • Sustainable Development
  • Promoting Opportunity through social mobility

The awards are valid for five years and the winners will be:

  • Invited to a Royal reception;
  • Presented with the award at their company by the Lord-Lieutenant, The Queen’s representative for Cumbria;
  • Able to fly The Queen’s Awards flag at their main office, and use the emblem on their marketing materials (for example, on packaging, advertisements, stationery and website);
  • Given a Grant of Appointment (an official certificate) and a commemorative crystal trophy.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Claire Hensman, the Queen’s representative in Cumbria, said: “It’s wonderful that Barrnon has once again showcased the excellence that exists in Cumbria by being awarded this prestigious national award.

“It is a significant achievement and provides the recognition that they deserve.

“I hope it will help their business continue to innovate and grow. Barrnon’s success will hopefully encourage other businesses to try for a Queen’s Award, in the future.

“I am keen to demonstrate that here in Cumbria we have many innovative and enterprising companies. National recognition of our businesses would be good for the county’s economy, particularly as we look to recover from the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the business community.

“The last twelve months have been tough for many of our businesses and people, given the challenges presented by the pandemic.

“Despite these challenges, our businesses have demonstrated remarkable resilience and are looking forward to the future.

“The awards provide the perfect opportunity to recognise what has been achieved.

“If businesses are interested in the Awards, my Deputy Lieutenants may be able to advise on the application process, so please feel free to make contact with the Lieutenancy Office to see how we can help.”

The office can be contacted on 01228 221722 or email: Suzannah.walker@cumbria.gov.uk
