A man caught with a knuckleduster on a Whitehaven street has been sentenced by a judge.
Police in the area of the town’s High Road at about 9.15pm on June 21 last year found 23-year-old Alexander Bowman in a garden.
During a search, the knuckleduster Bowman was illegally carrying was recovered from a jacket pocket.
Bowman, of Calder Avenue, Whitehaven, admitted possessing an offensive weapon in public and was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court this morning.
His barrister revealed that the incident, which dated back more than a year, had been a “catalyst for change” in the case of Bowman, who had since turned his back on drugs and become a father. “He is sorry and ashamed to find himself before the court,” added Judith McCullough.
Recorder David Temkin QC imposed an 18-month community order comprising a rehabilitation activity requirement and 80 hours’ unpaid work.
Recorder Temkin also ruled that the knuckleduster should be forfeited and destroyed.
