A West Cumbrian school is set to receive another £700 thanks to the exploits of a racing pigeon bred in the village.
Last year the bird – christened Frizy Flier – won over £800 for Frizington Primary School after being entered in the RPRA’s prestigious One Loft race for young birds and heading the Schools section.
The bird was bred by Andrew Kenmare and son Tom who race their birds in the village and are both former pupils of the school.
Frizy was entered into the yearling race this season again representing the school and during the three Hot Spot races has won another £160, with one second and two thirds, in the schools competition.
Les Blacklock, the Cumbria Region secretary, said: “The final race was held on Tuesday when 108 yearlings were liberated at 11.50am from Brechin, a distance of 334 miles.
“Three gallant pigeons homed on the night and at 5.18am the next morning Frizy Flier arrived home to record 4th Open and 1st Schools which was a tremendous performance by a really honest pigeon. Naturally Andrew and Tom are over the moon.
“Well done Frizy you have done our region proud.”
Andrew said: “It’s terrific that we can give something back to the school where both Tom and I enjoyed our time as pupils.”
The school’s headteacher Sarah Rose said: “We are extremely proud of our Frizy Flier.
“It is exciting having a pigeon as a mascot for our school and the fact that it is doing so well is brilliant to hear.
“Andrew, Tom and his brother Jack are former pupils and it is wonderful that they are honouring and supporting our school.”
