
Girls at a West Cumbrian school have shown that Lego is not just for boys as they celebrate success in the recent Lego League.
The inter-schools competition sees youngsters from across the country competing head-to-head in a real life “robot wars” style challenge. Building and programming their own Lego robots, and using skills of strategy, coding and ingenuity – school teams across the country battle it out in various tasks to be crowned an overall winner.
Students at St Bees School entered two teams, coincidentally both of which were entirely made up of girls. Both teams made it to the Cumbria final and were the only all-female teams to achieve an impressive “Silver” award in addition to two trophies.
Lego is not just for boys as students at St Bees School have valiantly shown in their success in the recent Lego League in addition to achieving coveted silver in the “Breakthrough Awards”, only given out to a few select teams.
“Not only did these teams work tirelessly after school in programming, coding, learning a new skill set – they did so as all-female teams, proving that engineering and coding is definitely accessible to all,” said Roger Sinnett, headmaster at the school.
“Their teamwork and leadership is what really pulled them together and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next year.”
The teams were made up of Year 7 and 8 students – Amelia, Charlotte, Leilah, Summer, Kelsie and Neve.
