Two Cumbrian organisations have been awarded almost £200,000 from BBC Children in Need.
The new funding – made possible following BBC Children in Need’s 2020 Appeal in November – will support the delivery of vital services to young people in the South Cumbria.
The Birchall Trust in Barrow has been granted £99,900 over three years, to provide specialist one-to-one therapy and counselling sessions to children and young people who have been affected by sexual abuse and exploitation.
The sessions will help to improve the young people’s resilience, confidence and self-worth as well as their safety.
Carer Support South Lakes in Kendal has been awarded a three-year grant of £97,976 to deliver one-to-one and group support sessions to young carers from the South Lakes area.
Taking part in the sessions will help the young people to develop their confidence and self-esteem, encourage engagement with their education and lead to a greater ability to cope with their caring responsibilities.
Michael Seaton, chief executive at Carer Support South Lakes said: “It’s fantastic news to hear that we’ve been awarded with new funding from BBC Children in Need which will enable us to continue supporting young carers in our community for the next three years.”
Kalima Patel, interim head of north and south at BBC Children in Need, said: “We’re delighted to have awarded these new grants in Cumbria and we look forward to seeing how this funding will make a difference to the children and young people that they support in the coming months and years.”
