An application to build 33 new homes in Carlisle has been recommended for approval.
The proposal is to build the properties on land at the bottom of Stainton Road. Carlisle City Council planners have recommended that the proposal is approved at a meeting of the Development Control Committee on July 23.
Carlisle City Councillor for the Belah ward, Gareth Ellis, highlighted that the land was not allocated for housing in Carlisle’s Local Plan, saying “there are abundant sites across the city that have been allocated and are yet to be developed. That’s the entire purpose of having such planning documents.
“If residents are to have confidence in the planning system, they need to feel that they are part of it.”
Mr Ellis added: “This site is not allocated for housing in Carlisle’s planning documents, it lacks the suitable infrastructure and appears to be a trojan horse for a much wider development down there.
“I’m calling on the Development Control Committee to reject this application. The application requires extensive changes to the highway to cope with the extra traffic and will have a negative impact on the area for nearby residents.”
