Emergency services are still working in a village near Whitehaven this morning after the bank behind the village school has begun to collapse.
Around 12 properties were evacuated overnight following concerns about the impact of the weather on the surrounding landscape and the potential impact on homes, a police spokesman said.
A Parton resident said: “It appears the bank behind the school has started to separate and it looks like it could give way at any minute. It’s a scary situation.”

A police spokesman added: “Site visits and assessments will take place later today in an effort to ascertain whether it is safe for those who were evacuated to return to their homes.”
