Young carers’ activities return

Staycations are bringing many new visitors to the Lake District, but for many families living in Cumbria a break away is more difficult as they juggle unpaid caring for loved ones.

Carers organisations have organised a programme of daily activities them a chance to have a few hours away and meet up with other unpaid carers.

From an hour learning archery to a day at Coniston Waterpark, a morning playing Laser Quest to a visit to the skatepark, the Young Carers Summer Programme provide an opportunity for Young Carers to take a break and have a few hours enjoying the school holidays.

The activities have been organised by Carers Support Cumbria.

Craig Backhouse, Furness Carers CEO said: “The Young Carers Summer Programme is so important, giving young people who dedicate so much of their lives to caring for a family member a chance to enjoy their school holiday just like all their friends – even if it is for just a few hours.”

As well as Young Carer activities, social events for all unpaid carers are starting to return with the lifting of COVID restrictions.

Dani Leslie, Eden Carers CEO said: “It has been a challenging 18 months for everyone, especially those with an unpaid caring role. There has been no break from their caring.

“We have been providing telephone and online support, however there is nothing that can replace meeting up with others, and taking a step away from caring for an hour or two.

“Our social events, including lunch, coffee and men’s hubs are small, informal groups where carers can meet with others to hare the rewards and challenges of caring.

“They are held in relaxed, friendly and supportive environments including a local cafes and a pub. Hubs provide an ideal way to socialise and make friends with others who understand the demands of a caring role.”

Support is also online for those who are unable to join the face-to-face activities. Support is available 24/7 by visiting www.carer-connect.org.

Summer and year-round events are organised by local carer organisations, part of Carers Support Cumbria.
