Workington Town have signed the former Newcastle Thunder loose forward David Weetman for the rest of the season.

Weetman, 21, has been playing his rugby in France with Saint Gauden and notched up 14 starts with the team in the Elite One Championship.

Originally a product of Cramlington Rockets he joined the Thunder Academy set up and played six times for the first time.

He spent the 2019 season on loan with Keighley Cougars, gaining valuable first team experience.

Town coach Chris Thorman sees him as exactly the right type of young player to bring on with the squad at Derwent Park.

Weetman said: “I’m really excited to be joining Workington Town, a good club with great players, backroom staff and fans.

“The club has made me feel really welcome since I’ve arrived and I look forward to helping with the push for promotion in the remainder of the season.”
