Workington manager Chris Willcock started his Reds reign with a1-0 NPL West win at Kidsgrove Athletic.
It was the first time that the Cumbrians had won there infive visits, but it was thoroughly deserved.
They dominated the game for long periods and it could have been an even more emphatic victory.
The only real scare they had was when substitute Ethen Hartshorn headed against the bar a few minutes after coming on midway through the second-half.
The goal that settled the game came after 38 minutes when Brad Carroll cut in and scored with a strong shot from a tight angle.
Dav Symington put one pile-driver into the side netting while home keeper Kieran Harrison made good stops to deny Ruben Jerome and Nico Evangelinos.
The only downside for Willcock was that in the first gameof the season four of his players – Carroll, Dan Wordsworth, Jerome and Jim Atkinson – picked up yellow cards.
Reds play their first home game on Tuesday night against City of Liverpool who opened today with a 0-0 home draw with Willcock’s old club Ramsbottom.
