Kendal Town slipped to their first defeat of the season – undone by defending at corners.
The Cumbrians lost 3-2 at Bootle in NPL West with the hosts’ two opening goals both conceded from corners.
Manager Chris Humphrey said: “I’m afraid it was down to a lack of desire in our own box to be first to the ball. Set plays will continue to be our downfall unless we are braver in those situations.”
Bootle went long whenever they could and although Kendal had handled similar tactics well against Glossop on Saturday, they couldn’t repeat the exercise.
“I thought we played some fantastic football at times and with a young team we are still on a learning curve so there were some positives to take from the game. We came back twice to score ourselves and gave them a few problems
“We will analyse the game with the lads and move onto the FA Cup game at Glossop on Saturday when we hope to have a couple of players back into the squad,” said Humphrey.
Bootle had taken the lead after only five minutes with the first goal by William Bell after a corner but Kendal hit back on 16 minutes when Greg McCaragher pulled them level.
More mayhem at a corner on 34 minutes saw Elliott Hughes put Bootle back in front and Jack McGowan added a third midway through the second-half.
Kendal were given hope by an 85th minute goal from Eric Yahaya but they couldn’t fashion an equaliser.
