The Barrow Super Soapbox Challenge returns to the streets of the town next Sunday.
Sponsored by BAE Systems, in 2019 the event attracted over 14,000 visitors to the town centre and Colin Garnett, Barrow BID manager is hoping that local residents and visitors will once again line the streets and cheer on the competitors.
He said: “Businesses in the town centre have had a tough 18 months with the COVID pandemic, so events like the Super Soapbox Challenge provide a great opportunity to attract people back to the town and offer a timely boost to businesses, particularly within the hospitality sector which has had a torrid time. It looks like a sunny weekend is forecast for Barrow so we hope people will head to Barrow town centre and support this free, family-friendly event.”
Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards will start the racing by launching down the two-storey ramp and setting the first time of the day at 10am.
Racing will take place throughout the day and the team setting the fastest time will be crowned Barrow Super Soapbox Champions following in the footsteps of Team Ørsted who won in emphatic style in 2019.
The event isn’t all about speed and other teams will hope to take home an award for the most innovative cart design, best turned-out Soapbox crew or joker of the day.
As well as the soapbox racing, the event will also host a funfair on Fell Street and Hall Street car parks and following the racing the Ørsted sponsored finish stage will be transformed into a live music stage with local bands and DJs entertaining the crowds into the early evening.
