Holmen Iggesund Cumberland ARL champions Distington slipped to their third defeat of the season.

They went down 30-8 at Wath Brow after being in the contest at half-time when they trailed 12-4.

The crucial score came on 51 minutes when Ellison Holgate seized on a dropped ball, shrugged off two tackles and went over for the try.

Distington had just got back into the game with their second try but Holgate’s score lifted the Hornets and they were able to pull clear.

The hosts had started well with a try on six minutes from winger Luke Spivey which was converted by their eventual man of the match, full-back Sam Curwen.

Without a first team game Hornets included two or three of their regulars and it was one of them Dean Rooney who scored the second try on 25 minutes, again converted by Curwen.

Five minutes later Distington got through the home defence and centre Scott Rooke touched down for an unconverted try.

A minute after the re-start Distington were right back into it when Rooke’s fellow centre Jack Penrice scored their second unconverted try.

It was a crucial period of the game but Holgate’s try on 51 minutes settled them down. They went on to score two more tries through Rooney and Luke Davison, both converted by Curwen.
