A man in his 50s was seriously assaulted in Workington in the early hours.
Police officers were called at around 2.05am to Brow Top by the ambulance service.
The man, from Yorkshire, suffered serious head injuries.
Cumbria police said enquiries were ongoing and they have secured the area.
