This year’s Alston Landscape Art Town Initiative is set to open with some breathtaking images of the area’s spectacular moorland.

The Brush and Lens Exhibition features images of Alston Moor by artists and photographers including Lionel Playford, Gilllie Cawthorne, Helen Johnson, Helen Wilkinson, Mike Knowles and Gordon Monk.

And the event also welcomes back an artist well-known in the area in the 1990s.

Bob Armstrong now lives in Lincolnshire, but still features the Pennine landscape in his work.

“In the 1990s I lived in the North Pennines for several years and the experience of living in such spectacular scenery has shaped my approach to painting ever since,” he said.

The exhibition runs from September 4-25 at St Augustine’s Church in Alston. A preview night to be held on Friday, September 3, between 7-9pm, will feature refreshments and music.

“The range of work on show from both artists and photographers is breath-taking and shows how our wonderful landscape up here on Alston Moor inspires people,” said Initiative chair Kathy Reeds.
