A council has evicted a settlement of travellers after concerns were raised by residents.

After reviewing the area and confirming the legal situation on Ashfield play area on Friday night, Workington Town Council employed an enforcement company to serve notice and remove the group from the area.

Notice was served to the travellers on Monday afternoon and on Tuesday the enforcement team turned up and oversaw the safe vacation of the site.

Workington Town Council has also introduced rock armour to the site to block access.

After the travellers had vacated the site town council employees and local councillors met to litter pick the area and remove rubbish left behind.

Those present were town clerk Catherine Gourlay, estate team member Aaron Magean, councillors Carole Armstrong, Herbert Briggs, Will Wilkinson and ward councillor Paul Scott.
