Comfortable win for Carlisle City

Brandon Longcake scores a superb goal for Carlisle City.

Carlisle City made it 19 points from seven home games in Northern League Division Two when they comfortably beat Washington 6-0.

Washington had only gained one point on their travels and City could have been ahead within seconds as Palmer failed to head in Irving’s right-wing cross.

Some early offside flags were interrupting City attacks but it was only the 4th minute when the first goal arrived as Irving ran in from the right and shot powerfully across Outhwaite into the far corner.

It looked as if the floodgates might open early on as a second goal arrived on eight minutes, with Palmer sweeping in a left-wing cross from eight yards out, for his sixthtgoal of the season.

On 15 minutes, City were ahead 3-0 as a superb 25-yard strike from Atkinson soared over Outhwaite’s head and into the top corner. The Washington keeper was certainly busy as he then produced two saves in quick succession to keep the score-line respectable.

Hassanin did then threaten the City defence on 21 minutes as he broke down the left, and forced Townsley into his first save but the resulting corner was cleared.

It was then a succession of Carlisle attacks and stirling work by Outhwaite tokeep the score at 3-0.

A fine pass from Atkinson set-up Irving with another chance but Outhwaite made the save. Atkinson and Irving then combined again on 28 minutes to win a corner, which was gathered comfortably by Outhwaite.

The over-worked visiting keeper then blocked Holt who was running clear in the 31st minute.

Atkinson then blazed wide from a good position after a fine 40th-minute City move. The same player should then have added his second goal but fired wide from inside the box, with only Outhwaite to beat.

Just before the break, Irving found Palmer with Outhwaite once again saving well, at the expense of a corner, which was safely cleared.

It was the same story as the second half got underway with a save from Outhwaite from Holt’s shot Irving’s cross was put out by Johnson for a corner, and Holt was just wide with his effort as the cross came over.

A right-wing cross from Olsen on the 50th minute landed on the bar and dropped over. Atkinson latched on to Simpson’s cross in the 53rd minute but his header was off target.

The first change saw Longcake replace Atkinson on the hour before another batch of offside flags thwarted several City attacks.

On 67 minutes, City’s second substitute Shiel linked with Holt and his shot was blocked for a corner, with Irving heading the cross against the bar from just a few yards out.

Two minutes later came the goal of the game and an early contender for goal of the season as Longcake embarked on a right-wing run, leaving three defenders in his wake before calmly rolling the ball past the wrong-footed Outhwaite.

It was 5-0 when Seymour unluckily turned the ball into his own net, from Irving’s left-wing cross.

The rush of goals continued on 73 minutes as Holt finally got his goal after many attempts, firing into the corner from the edge of the box.

There was a late rally from Washington looking for a consolation as Stephenson fired over the bar, and Broomfield should have scored but shot straight at Townsley
