A peek behind the scenes of a Savile Row tailor, an art auction, treasure hunt, street theatre and live music, and a fabulous food market – there’s lots in store for visitors to the new Taste of Wigton festival.

The event takes place in the heart of this pretty market town throughout Saturday, October 23.

One of the highlights will be exclusive tours of one of the town’s businesses which has clients around the globe, but is still a bit of a Cumbrian secret. Redmayne 1860, which has offices in Wigton and Mayfair, has been creating bespoke tailoring for more than 160 years – including for the royal family – and the team take their creative skills around the world.

Visitors will be able to tour their shop, and quiz expert tailor Tom Mahon at an ‘in conversation with’ session. Free tickets are available now from www.visitallerdale.co.uk/taste-cumbria-home

Elsewhere in town, Water Street Car Park will host the Producers’ Market with street food, a fairground and a showcase of local bands and entertainers. There will also be street theatre, storytelling in a dedicated tipi, a heritage trail quiz, a Find Wigton Ted treasure hunt through the High Street, and a children’s activity village in the Market Hall.

The John Peel Theatre will hold backstage tours and free workshops from 10.30am until 12.30pm, and then an art auction from 2pm. Elsewhere in town, the Fountain Gallery in King Street will have an exhibition from town artist Brian Campbell.

Councillor Mike Johnson, the leader of Allerdale Borough Council, the event organiser, said: “We’ve just finished a fabulous Taste Cumbria festival in Cockermouth and now we have a brilliantly busy month as we prepare for the first Taste of Wigton celebration.

“It has been absolutely brilliant to see so many smiling people on the streets, shopping and talking, eating and drinking, and enjoying visiting our towns, and the county’s amazing businesses. This promises to be another great event.”

The event is organised by Allerdale Borough Council with the support of Cumbria County Council, Wigton Town Council, North Allerdale Development Trust, John Peel Theatre and Free 4 All community group.

Any businesses who would like a stall in the Producers’ Market can click here or email ellie.jones@allerdale.gov.uk for details.

Another date for the diary: Taste Cumbria Christmas is in Cockermouth on December 11 and 12.
