One flood warning and five alerts are now in force in Cumbria as rain continues to hit the county.

A flood warning – the second most severe warning issued by the Environment Agency – is in force at Keswick Campsite.

It states: “The level of Derwentwater remains high following several days of rain. Further heavy rain is forecast on Tuesday which will cause the water level to rise again. Areas most at risk of flooding include low-lying land bordering the shores of Derwentwater and the frontage of the Keswick Camping and Caravan Club Site.

“Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses, do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwater. This flood warning is expected to remain in place for several days. We will continue to monitor the forecast and update this warning if necessary.”

An update on the latest situation is expected before 5pm, the Environment Agency says.

Flood alerts – the lowest level of warning issued by the Environment Agency – are in force for the following areas:

  • Rivers Esk and Irthing – Flooding is possible – be prepared. The alert says: “River levels have risen on the Rivers Esk and Irthing due to heavy rainfall. Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Rivers Esk and Irthing, with low-lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around the Rivers Esk and Irthing and other watercourses, including low-lying areas around Longtown and Brampton.
“We are clearing debris from screens in the area and will continue to monitor levels closely. Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwater. This message will be updated by 10am tomorrow, or as the situation changes.”
  • Rivers Lowther and Eamont – Flooding is possible – be prepared. The alert states: “River levels are high on the Rivers Lowther and Eamont due to persistent heavy rainfall. Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Rivers Lowther and Eamont, with low-lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around Rivers Eamont and Lowther to their confluence with the River Eden at Langwathby.
“Further rainfall is forecast until 9pm on Tuesday. We will continue to monitor levels closely. Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwater. This message will be updated by 10am tomorrow, or as the situation changes.”
  • Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater – Flooding is possible – be prepared. The alert says: “River levels remain high on the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck, Derwentwater and surrounding watercourses. Flooding is likely to affect locations near the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater.
“This flood alert is likely to remain in place for several days, with further heavy rain forecast for today. Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through floodwater. This message will be updated by 5pm today, or as the situation changes.”
  • Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster – Flooding is possible – be prepared. The alert states: “Water levels are high on Windermere, Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster and other watercourses, from Grasmere to Grange-over-Sands including low-lying areas around Ambleside, Skelwith Bridge, Windermere, Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Backbarrow, Cark and Cartmel due to several days of heavy rain.
“Rain is expected throughout daylight hours today. Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water. This message will be updated by 10am tomorrow, or as the situation changes.”
