An open day is to be held to celebrate the start of the new snowsports season.
Kendal Snowsports Club has just opened for the 2021-22 season and to celebrate is holding an open day on October 23.
“We are inviting anyone who is interested in taking up skiing, or who would like to know more about the club,” said Rob Blyth, club chairman.
“People can come along to the Slope at Canal Head North, Kendal, between 10am-3pm, where you will have the opportunity to have a go at skiing for free under the expert guidance of our friendly instructors.”
The club was formed in 1984 when a small group of local skiers met at the Brewery Arts Centre with the aim of starting a club and building an artificial ski slope and ski lodge on the hillside below Kendal Castle.
A few of the members trained to become qualified ski instructors enabling the club to deliver lessons. Membership increased rapidly allowing us to invest in improved facilities, upgrade equipment, and develop the artificial slope to become one of the best in the region.
The club welcomes everyone from the ages of seven to 100 and of all abilities. It offers lessons for adults and children from beginner through to advanced, and for more daring skiers and snowboarders they have coaching in freestyle and race training.
The club’s race training members compete in the Pendle Winter Race League and also at local and national levels. On September 20, Katie Ormerod and Jake Armitstead both won gold medals at the National School Snowsport Association races held at Chill Factore, Manchester.
The club has also had two Olympians, Emma Lonsdale who competed in the Sochi Olympics and Matthew Stockford who won four bronze medals in the winter Paralympics.
More recently, it has given the club great pride to be able to offer adaptive skiing, which has been fully embraced by KSC and enables people with disabilities to take part in snowsport activities using specially adapted equipment and specialised coaching.
The club is a registered charity and is fully operated by a team of volunteers who provide their time instructing, setting up equipment, maintenance and taking care of the gardens.
“As well as a wide range of snowsports activities the club offers social events and special events throughout the year,” said Tracy Oncal, one of the club’s instructors.
“We are a community where everyone is welcome, with a great vibe in a fun, friendly, environment for outdoor fitness.”
Anyone is welcome to turn up at the open day on October 23.
