It’s little or no consolation after a defeat when the opposition goalkeeper wins their man of the match award.
But it might be an indication that on another day and against a different keeper, a point or more could have been gathered.
At the weekend Celtic goalkeeper Ross Doohan, on loan to Tranmere, received plaudits from Rovers fans after they awarded him man of the match for his performance at Carlisle United in the 1-0 victory.
Doohan made a number of key stops throughout the encounter, helping his side to a crucial clean sheet.
One notable save came in the second-half, with Doohan reacting quickly with his feet from close range after his defence had been outdone.
Jordan Gibson was criticised for not scoring but perhaps not enough was made of Doohan’s save to deny him.
Afterwards Doohan was the immediate choice amongst travelling supporters for their club’s official man of the match award, which has been confirmed today.
The 23-year-old has had to remain patient for his chance after joining from Celtic on loan during the summer, as he was on the bench for the first six games of the League Two season.
Since last month he’s kept four clean sheets in a five-game unbeaten run for Micky Mellon’s side.
Doohan has less than a year remaining on his Celtic contract but has made it that his long-term ambition is to become the number one keeper for the Bhoys.
Celtic coaches Stevie Woods and Colin Meldrum are keeping a close eye on his progress in England as he looks to get more regular senior football and secure a new deal in Glasgow.
