The Met Office is warning of up to 200mm of rain in Cumbria.

The Met Office is warning of up to 200mm of rain in Cumbria.

The forecaster has issued a yellow weather warning – the lowest level of alert issued by the Met Office – for the whole of the county.

Coming into force at 6am on Wednesday and running until 12pm on Thursday, it warns of “persistent and at times heavy rain”.

What to expect:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings;
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life;
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services;
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures;
  • There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads.

“In general, 40-80 mm is expected within the warning area but 140-180 mm is likely over high ground with as much as 200 mm in some locations,” the Met Office added.
