Penrith went out of the FA Vase at Prestwich Heys, but not until they had given their hosts a fright.
Trailing 3-0 at the break the young Cumbrian side look destined for a heavy defeat but in a spirited fight-back had their hosts rocking.
Max Brown, who was injured pre-season and is just starting to regain his touch, scored twice to put Penrith right back in it.
They were pushing strongly for the equaliser when Heys broke and were awarded a penalty, which was scored and effectively killed-off the Penrith challenge.
Chairman Billy Williams said: “It was a commendable effort after we found ourselves three down in the first-half and a very young team deserve a lot of credit.
“We won the second-half 2-1 against an experienced side and when we pulled it back to 3-2 I know they were worried. I’m afraid the penalty that tipped the game their way was very controversial.
“All things considered it was a heartening effort. We have some promising players who have come through from the Academy and reserve teams and they are going to get a lot more chances.
“The aim will be to survive in Division One this season and these lads will pick-up valuable experience.
“Our new manager Chris Humphrey hasn’t had a chance to work with the full squad yet but that should happen now as we don’t have a mid-week fixture.
“But we face a massive test on Saturday when we play Consett who are top of the League by five points.”
They are going to be without wide midfielder Bryce Dean-Norman for a while as he suffered what looked like a serious knee injury at Prestwich.
