After an enforced break last year due to the pandemic, landscape conservation charity Friends of the Lake District’s large scale volunteering days are back.

Volunteers are being invited to take part in a day’s conservation work doing a variety of activities around the Haweswater valley; the venue for its ‘Haweswater Fell Care Day’ being held on November 4.

There are a range of activities on offer including dry stone walling, apple tree pruning, upland path maintenance with Fix the Fells, juniper planting above Blea Water or helping out at the tree nursery at RSPB Haweswater.

Douglas Chalmers, chief executive, Friends of the Lake District, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting our Fell Care Days again and getting out into the spectacular Haweswater valley. Autumn is traditionally the most popular time for our Fell Care Days and if you want to join us please book early as we’re obviously managing numbers more closely this year and expect the activities to book up quickly.

“It’s always heartening to see so many people coming together to care for our landscapes and I’d urge people to come along, meet like-minded people, learn a new skill and give a little back”.

You don’t need any special skills, as all activities will be led by experts and skilled leaders. You may need some level of fitness though, depending on the activity. After a day’s hard work volunteers will meet back at Bampton Memorial Hall for some well-earned tea and cake.

The event is free but places need to be booked in advance on Friends of the Lake District’s website. It’s always a popular event and numbers are limited so organisers are asking people to book early to avoid disappointment.
