Cumbria County Council’s chief executive has stepped down from her role just months after being appointed.
Gill Steward began her tenure in August, replacing the outgoing Katherine Fairclough and promising to “build a better place and future for the people of Cumbria”.
BBC Radio Cumbria reports that there were “tensions behind the scenes around the plans to split Cumbria and create two new councils”.
When approached by Cumbria Crack about the resignation and the circumstances surrounding it, Cumbria County Council provided the following statement: “Gill Steward has decided to step down from her position of chief executive for Cumbria County Council.
“From 1st December, John Readman will assume the responsibilities of the chief executive in his capacity as deputy chief executive whilst the council considers options going forward.”
