Residents and a local councillor rallied round to clear a tree blocking a Carlisle road.

The tree – which came down during Storm Arwen – was blocking the way down to Balmoral Court, off Etterby Road.

Gareth Ellis, city and county councillor for Belah, who helped clear the tree said: “Following Storm Arwen I received reports of a tree blocking the road, I reported it to Cumbria Highways, but understandably we were way down the priority list at a time when many areas of the county were in a much worse state.

“I went down to see what I could do to help move the tree and the landlord’s agent had sent someone out to help clear what looked like a three-person job being done by one. So I offered to help. Soon after that, a local resident came to help also. The three of us made quick work of the blockage.”

Mr Ellis added: “It’s great to see such community spirit, making sure the road was cleared so quickly for emergency vehicles and local residents.”

Balmoral Court was originally built as a hostel/hotel for railway workers in the 1940s but is now a set of flats adjacent to Kingmoor Sidings Nature Reserve.
