A blaze at a Carlisle industrial estate is now over – almost a month after it caught fire.
Six fire engines were called to North West Recycling on the Rockcliffe Industrial Estate on November 8 to deal with a blaze involving 500 tonnes of plastic.
Partners, including Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, Cumbria County Council, Carlisle City Council and the Environment Agency, have worked continuously since then at the site.
Work to retrieve waste from within the structure of the building is now complete.
As a precautionary measure, residents were advised to keep all windows and doors closed while the work was carried out.
A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said: “We can confirm that due to the decreased smoke levels, it is safe for residents to open their doors and windows.”

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has confirm that the incident no longer requires direct firefighting and the premises are now back in the hands of the site management team at North West Recycling.
A spokesman added: “A programme of work will now be agreed and developed to demolish the remains of the building and will be carefully monitored and managed by a range of agencies and specialists.
“The site will be kept under review and monitored to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the local community.”
