Carlisle United captain Callum Guy has earned high praise from a rival manager even though he was unable to complete the game.
Nigel Clough described 25-year-old Guy as one of the best midfielders in League Two after his side bet the Blues 1-0 on Tuesday.
That was even though he limped from the pitch after 64 minutes with a groin injury.
Clough had said: “Although they sre struggling towards the wrong end of the table Carlisle are a side who can hurt you and in Callum Guy they have one of the best midfield players in the Division.”
Clough was Guy’s manager at Derby County from 2009/13 when he was a member of the youth squad.
Explaining the substitution United manager Keith Millen said: “He felt his groin, he wanted to carry on, but I didn’t want to risk making it worse.
“He’s been brilliant, so fingers crossed, bringing him off has stopped him getting any more damage to it.
“I was hoping getting him off early might save any future problems, we’ll have to wait and see in the next couple of days on that one.
“Zach Clough is going to be out for a few weeks. He’s got a problem with his calf, it’s an old injury that’s flared up again, so he’ll be side-lined for a while.”
Guy joined Carlisle in January 2020 and has since been a key player for them in the middle of the park where he has made 73 appearances in all competitions. He made more assists last season than any other player in Division Two.
He was the club’s Player of the Year and clearly an important member of Millen’s squad as he battles to get them out of trouble.
The former Derby County and Blackpool man was linked with Wrexham of the National League in the last transfer window.
However, Carlisle were able to retain his services and have since tied him down to a new contract until 2023.
