Hospice at Home is once again organising this festive fundraising initiative that not only helpfully recycles trees after the festive season but also raises vital funds to provide local hospice care in the community.
Last year, the charity collected over 1,100 trees, raising over £16,000. The areas in which the charity is collecting trees covers Penrith, Carlisle, Wigton, Longtown, Brampton and Dalston – a significant proportion of the area in which Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland’s clinical services operate.
This year’s collection will take place on Wednesday, January 12 2022.
Refuse and Recycling Collections
There will be no changes to your usual refuse and recycling collection dates in Carlisle over Christmas and New Year.
Collections will carry on as usual – even on Bank holidays.

Recycle for Carlisle
- Use one of your recycling bags for plastic and the other for paper, cardboard and food/drinks cartons. Use your green box for tins, cans (including empty aerosol cans) and glass bottles/jars.
- Check your collection dates online and remember to put your containers out by 7am on your collection day. There will be no return if you miss your collection.
- Take your containers back onto your property the same day after collection. It is also helpful to mark your property name/number on your containers.
- In high winds, do not leave containers out overnight. Keep hold of your recycling until your next collection or use a local recycling site to reduce the risk of materials littering your streets.
- Please note, the council can collect black plastic trays and clean aluminium foil trays (no kitchen foil).
- Please remember that we CANNOT collect Christmas wrapping paper for recycling. Wrapping paper is often shiny, dyed, laminated, glittery or plastic backed, and covered in sticky tape. None of these can be recycled. This also applies to glittery and foil Christmas cards. Place wrapping paper and the fronts of glittery and foil cards into your refuse. Place the backs of glittery and foil cards into your paper and cardboard recycling bag.
- Consider reusing materials to make Christmas items e.g., crackers, decorations, cards, or using a reusable gift bag instead of wrapping paper.
