Barrow likely to benefit from Ipswich Town call-off

Ipswich Town’s scheduled Under-23s trip to Bristol City this afternoon has been called off with the Tractor Men looking ahead to Wednesday’s FA Cup clash at Barrow.

After the 0-0 draw at Portman Road, the two sides will be lining up in the replay which is being televised by ITV.

Given the Under-23s postponement it suggests that Ipswich might be fielding some younger players in the Cup replay.

However there’s also the fact that Ipswich have an FA Youth Cup third round game at Spurs on Thursday night when members of the Under-23s squad would be involved.

Also to bear in mind is the visit of Sunderland this Saturday for the first of what are being packaged as Pack Out Portman Road festive fixtures.

Many of the decisions will be taken by current interim boss John McGreal and assistant Kieron Dyer, who are also part of the usual Under-23s set-up.

McGreal was the initial favourite for the vacant Carlisle United job, eventually filled by Keith Millen.

Since Paul Cook was sacked after the 0-0 FA Cup draw with Barrow, the Tractormen have lost 2-0 at Charlton and then drew 1-1 at Wigan on Saturday,

Ipswich don’t appear to have commented on the postponement of the Under-23s fixture but on the Bristol City website a statement read: “The Robins were looking forward to welcoming fans to the Robins High Performance Centre for the first time to see the Young Robins but a number of factors prompted the visitors’ application to reschedule.”

Town, however, do say a new date for the Bristol trip will be confirmed in due course.

Meanwhile a new date has now been confirmed for Barrow’s Sky Bet League Two game against Salford City at The Dunes Hotel Stadium.

The Ammies were due to make the trip to Barrow last Wednesday, but heavy rain left the pitch unplayable, and the game was postponed.

The two clubs have since been in discussions about a new date for the fixture and it has been agreed that Salford will now visit The Dunes Hotel Stadium on Tuesday January 25 (7.45pm kick-off).

All tickets bought for the original fixture will remain valid for the rearranged date.
