Former first team captain Tim Shepherd has been appointed chairman of rugby.
The appointment has been announced by the Board of Directors, who say the role is the link between themselves and coaches, as well as managers and players who are responsible for the actual rugby played at Penrith RUFC.
‘Shep’ has a long affiliation with the club, joining over 30 years ago as a fresh-faced 16-year-old, making his first-team debut in the same season, alongside current club president Charles Graves.
He went on to play well over 300 games for the first team, captaining the side in the 2001/2002 season.
Since retiring from playing, he has been involved in the coaching of the junior section of the club, giving him a real insight into the challenges facing rugby clubs in the modern game, particularly around the transition of players from Colts into senior rugby.
Speaking of his appointment, Shepherd said: “I’m really excited to get my teeth into this challenging role and am looking forward to speaking to as many people involved with the club as possible.
“I hope to gain an understanding of how we can provide an inclusive environment, to allow any player to enjoy and flourish within this wonderful game we love and cherish.
“My first task is to set up a working group/committee to review the club’s overall development plan. I know we have a wide range of skills and experience within our current crop of volunteers, and I will be looking to take advantage of these to ensure Penrith RUFC becomes a centre of excellence for anyone wishing to play rugby”.
The board added: “We wish Shep all the best in his new role and hope he can persuade as many as possible to get involved.”
