There’s always fan interest when a club announces the squad numbers for the approaching season.
It’s often an indication of how the coach is thinking on his strongest line-up, but often throws up a few red herrings as players are given numbers of personal significance outside the first 13 on offer.
Barrow Raiders have confirmed their 2022 squad numbers for their return to the Championship after winning the League One title last season.
Head coach Paul Crarey has added a handful of experienced players to his squad for 2022 but only a couple are in a normal starting figuration.
Former Wigan half-back Jarrod Sammut, the vastly experienced Maltese international will wear the number six shirt and 30-year-old former Oldham stalwart Danny Langtree will wear number 11 next season.
Former Wakefield hooker Josh Wood has been handed number 22 and overseas signing Anton Iaria, who is due to arrive in the UK in early January, will wear shirt number 24. He has won four caps for Italy and will be hoping to play in next year’s World Cup.
Two former Whitehaven players, Ellis Gillam and Sam Brooks, will wear numbers 21 and 23 respectively.
Former St Helens, Warrington and Toronto Wolfpack centre or stand-off Gary Wheeler will wear shirt number 20, while former Salford forwards Adam Walne and Jordan Walne will wear eight and 13 respectively.
Carl Forster, who will be an assistant coach to Crarey in 2022, will wear the number 10 shirt.
At the end of the day numbers don’t matter – it’s performances which decide who retains the position and their shirt.
