West Cumbrian star Demi Fisher, who has successfully battled cancer, has signed for Barrow Raiders Ladies.

Demi is the latest signing for the Raiders ahead of their debut in the 2022 Betfred Women’s Super League.

Fisher originally started playing rugby league in Cumbria at the age of eight for Glasson Rangers.

She was selected to represent England Students at 16, but suffered a serious knee injury in her second season playing for the side.

She then worked her way back from injury, and went on to play at Castleford Tigers and Stanningley while studying at Leeds Beckett.

Fisher brings a wealth of courage and inspiration to the side, having recently been diagnosed with stage three melanoma, but is thankfully now in remission and is looking forward to her return to the field.

She said: “Unfortunately, earlier this year I was diagnosed with stage three melanoma and this, alongside the pandemic, stopped me playing due to ongoing treatment and two operations.

“Luckily, however, I am now in remission and I can’t wait to get back onto the pitch.

“The fact Amanda Wilkinson is the coach is a huge deal for me, playing back for a Cumbrian team with a Cumbrian coach.

“I originally met Amanda when I was eight-years-old and knew back then I wanted to be coached by Amanda and play for her when moving into a women’s team and with her being back in Cumbria, this is 100 per cent the right time for me to do so.

“I couldn’t feel any more like it was the right time to come back to Cumbria and start playing rugby league from home again under the watchful eye of Amanda, especially considering how well Cumbria’s three main men’s teams are doing, being promoted into the Championship.

“I know fine well with the girls at Barrow and their eagerness to succeed and Amanda’s wealth of experience we can add some excitement to the Cumbrian rugby league scene and do Cumbria proud.”

On her latest signing, head coach Wilkinson said: “I first met Demi at Glasson Rangers as a youngster and her natural talent was apparent then. She is a smart player who has good vision, great skill and a good kicking game also.

“Demi has just fought one of her biggest challenges having been diagnosed with cancer during Covid. To get through that in what was a tough time for most without such an awful battle speaks volumes of her mental toughness, self-belief, strength and determination.

“These are the attributes of a great athlete and rugby player. Speaking with Demi she is excited for pre-season, but will be working hard on her rehab in preparation.

“I’m so looking forward to coaching Demi again. It’s been about 15 years since I last coached her, but I’ve always watched her from afar. She will be a great addition to our squad.”
