Taxi fares in Barrow are set to rise for the first time in a decade.
It has been revealed by Barrow Borough Council that the changes to hackney cab fares will begin on February 1.
Fares for distances of half a mile or less are to increase – from £2.40 to £2.80 between 7am and midnight, from £3.60 to £4.20 between midnight and 7am, and from £4.80 to £5.60 on bank holidays, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
The rate for each one-tenth of a mile driven after the half-mile mark is to remain the same at all times of the year.
For hiring begun between midnight and 7am, the waiting time cost is to increase from 15p to 20p for each 30 seconds. For bank holiday, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve hire, this figure is to increase from 20p to 40p
The council says any rise or reduction in fares factors in changing costs such as fuel, insurance and vehicle maintenance.
Objections to the change in rates should be emailed to commercial@barrowbc.gov.uk or made in writing to Head of Public Protection, Public Protection, Town Hall, Duke Street, Barrow, LA14 2LD.
