Two men were found with head injuries in Workington on New Year’s Day.

Police have charged two men in connection with the incident and they have been remanded in custody following a court appearance.

Jamie Elston, 31, of Iredale Crescent, Workington and David Ratcliffe, 32, of Falcon Place, Workington, have been charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.

Officers were called at 8.52am on January 1 following concern for the welfare of two men at a property in William Street, Workington.

Two men were discovered with injuries.

One, aged 38, was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with head injuries. He is in a critical but stable condition.

The other, aged 34, was taken by ambulance to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven with head injuries. He has since been discharged.

Elston and Ratcliffe appeared before Carlisle’s magistrates’ court on Monday and the case was adjourned until a later date.
