Workington’s Station Road B extended their lead at the top of Division One in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League with a 4-1 home win against Division Two’s Maryport Social.
In the top versus bottom clash Maryport’s Andrew Sharp made the perfect start for the underdogs with a fine win to put his team 1-0 up.
Nevertheless the Station B charge started in frame two as Simon Frazer won on the black. Frame three resulted in a fairly routine win for Station B’s Peter O’Hagan and as team-mate Mark Tunstall produced the best break of the round with 47 in the next it was soon 3-1.
The last again saw Stephen O’Hagan take up his usual anchor role and with a solid victory the Station B captain galvanised the match win with aplomb.
Station Road B sit on 35 points in Division One while Maryport Social remain bottom of Division Two on just eight points.
As Workington’s Veterans Club B were without a fixture it gave Division Two leaders The United Club a chance to put some distance between themselves and their rivals, and in a closely contested match they did just that with a 3-2 home victory against Whitehaven’s Rack Shack.
Another victory for the in-form Stephen Harrison gave the Rack Shack a 1-0 lead but with United’s Dave Chapman winning the next the scores were level.
A mid-match burst saw the United Club go 3-1 up with victories from Mark Suitor and Clive Lister but it was Andrew Moore who put some respectability into the score with a superb win in the last to pull the final match score back to 3-2.
The United Club are on a first placed 22 point total with Rack Shack third, also in Division Two, on 15 points.
Even though Workington Conservative Club recorded their ninth win out of nine, with a 3-2 home victory over Workington Golf Club, the point a frame format sees them still in a Division One second spot.
The Golf Club were the side who started the better, and with wins in the first two frames from Ryan Ismay and Bryan Walker a first Cons defeat looked a real possibility.
However with pure grit and determination, and a few pink and black finishes later, Alan Moore, Ryan Barker and Julian Plaza did the business for the Cons club in a superb comeback to record the match win.
Workington Cons are on 32 points with Workington Golf Club one place behind on 25 points.
Station Road A leap-frogged opponents Veterans Club A in the division 1 table with a 3-2 away victory that ended in dramatic fashion.
There hasn’t been much to separate the two Workington sides this season but as Tom Thompson (34 break) and Chris Hunter crushed their Vets A opponents in the first two frames an easy win seemed the most likely outcome.
An error strewn third could have gone either way but it was Vets A captain Kevin Basnett who eventually took control to stop the rot at 2-1.
A near 40 point-deficit in the fourth looked to be going in the Station A direction but with one of the performances of the season it was Vets A’s Steve Garroway who levelled the score with some superb match play snooker.
At 2-2, and with just three reds left in the last, the Vets A side looked almost certain to be recording a brilliant comeback win.
However an outstanding 33 break, followed by a good pot on the pink saw Mike Walker deliver a Houdini style escape to nick the match win for the Station A outfit.
Station A are fourth in the top division on 23 points with Vets A bottom of the table on 22 points.
